We lived with this bathroom for 11 years before renovating it. Looking at the finished room now, it's hard to connect it to the one we knew for so long. Almost everything changed, and the before and after photos really put that into perspective.

I didn't begin the renovation with a fully formed vision. I was still figuring out what the bathroom would become while the work was happening. The design came together gradually, and that feels like an important part of its story.

The finished bathroom: our own little space we're grateful to enjoy every day.

The bathroom before

Beneath the large arched window, a spa tub sat within a tiled surround. This was the bathroom we lived with for 11 years, and the before photo shows how much space the tub occupied.

Our old tub, which took up plenty of space but rarely got used.

We barely used the tub, so when it came time to renovate, we decided to remove it. It took up a good amount of space, and keeping it just didn’t make sense for how we used our bathroom.

The old bathroom also had a light-colored vanity beside a shower enclosed by glass block walls.

This was a nearly complete renovation. The ceilings and part of the window remained, while almost everything else changed. Those few remaining pieces connect the bathroom we lived with to the room you see today.

Finding the design as we went

Seeing the finished room makes it easy to imagine that every detail was settled from the start. In reality, I was making design decisions as the work progressed. The overall look became clearer gradually.

That's part of what makes this renovation personal to me. I can look around the room now and see how those individual choices came together, even though I couldn't have pictured the whole space at the beginning.
During the renovation, as the new layout took shape.

The finished bathroom

The finished bathroom has a soft, neutral palette, with warm wood tones that give the pale surfaces some depth. The floor's gray veining adds movement, while the white shower tile keeps the room feeling light.

The wood vanity adds some warmth alongside all the lighter finishes. We paired it with mirrors that have rounded corners and glass sconces. The champagne bronze fixtures tie all together, with the same finish carried into the shower.

With the glass shower and all that light from the window, the side of the bathroom feels so much more open now. We kept the tile simple, with champagne bronze fixtures and a little pattern on the shower floor.

The details that make it feel like home

Now there’s a wooden bench beneath the window with folded towels, a basket underneath and a little greenery. It’s a simple corner, but it feels much more like us.

Those smaller details matter to me. The plants, wood and simple textiles give the bathroom the warmth I enjoy throughout our home. They also leave room for the renovation itself to be seen.

I did have a vision for the wall beside the toilet, but the idea needed solid mounting support right where the pocket door slides behind it. So for now, the wall is staying simple. Our laundry hamper, which isn't pictured here, is part of how we use this space every day. I'm still deciding what belongs on the wall. A home is always in the making, and this little spot is no exception.

A little space still coming together.
Seeing it all together

After 11 years with the old bathroom, seeing the before and afters together still makes me pause. So much of the room changed, and I found my way to the design as it happened.

My husband and I still talk about how grateful we are that we were able to have our bathroom renovated. After 11 years with the old bathroom, we enjoy this space every single day. It feels like our own little spa, right here at home. 🏚
